The biggest difference is ECU tuning capability. The 2020–2023 kit includes a full 5-tune SOTF package with power levels from 0HP to +150HP - you can switch between them on the fly. The 2024–2025 kit is limited to a single fixed emissions-off calibration without SOTF power switching support because GM locked down the ECU security on those trucks. The ECM also has to be shipped to HP Tuners for unlocking on the 2024–2025 - that service isn't included in the kit. Delete pipes, EGR hardware, and exhaust systems are the same across both groups - it's the tuning side that changes.
The 2020–2023 L5P with a full SOTF tune package sees up to +150HP at the top power level. Torque climbs with it - the Allison 10-speed responds well to the higher calibration. Throttle response sharpens noticeably, and the turbo spools faster without the DPF restriction. The 2024–2025 trucks are currently limited to a single fixed emissions-off calibration without SOTF power switching support - the delete still removes the DPF, DEF, and EGR hardware, but you won't see the same horsepower gains until higher-level tunes become available for that ECU.
You'll see better fuel economy primarily because the engine isn't running forced regen cycles anymore. The factory aftertreatment system creates additional exhaust restriction, especially during active regeneration cycles - removing it lets the engine breathe. Most L5P owners report 2–3 MPG improvement on highway. Short-trip drivers who dealt with constant regens notice it most. Running a +150HP SOTF tune aggressively won't save fuel - it'll make power instead.
The delete pipe and exhaust are bolt-on jobs from underneath - most owners handle that part without trouble. The EGR delete requires more patience - the bolts sit tight between the intake manifold and the block. The ECU unlock process involves connecting the HP Tuners tool via OBD-II and flashing the calibration - it's software-driven, not mechanical. Plan for a full day if you're doing everything together.
